You may remember seeing Brandon and Cameron's engagement shots in an earlier post. I absolutely LOVED working with this family. I actually met Brandon, Cameron and Cameron's mom, Kurt as a referral from one of my sisters. It feels as if I have known them all forever.

Brandon is the Head Men's Tennis coach at IUPUI and Cameron is the Head Women's Tennis coach at IUPUI. The theme of their wedding was - of course - TENNIS. They used pro tennis players photos as the table numbers - which were a huge hit with all of the guests. There was so much love at this wedding ceremony and reception! Cameron's dad made it clear to everyone in attendance that we were all FAMILY.

Chances are, when you were dating your spouse-to-be, you received flowers, because when you receive flowers, the doors of your heart swing open. When you give flowers, doors swing open in response. Expressing love and kindness through flowers helps a relationship grow over time. And research proves, as I always believed, that flower givers are thought of as caring and loving people who appreciate beauty.

What follows is my advice for building loving relationships, sending love spontaneously and instantly improving the mood of a loved one. Also there to help is your florist, who’s like that friend-in-the-know who has the best advice and the hottest tips, who you can always rely on to help you add that special touch.

Don’t go for the traditional or the trend. Choose what is meaningful to you.

There is a lot of pressure on brides to pick the ‘right’ everything. That ‘right’ everything can only come from one place… inside you. Get ideas from outside, but make choices on what’s inside. Work with your florist to pick flowers that mean something to you both, and the flower will last as long as the memory and the photos!

Don’t just give flowers to the “expected” people. Use flowers to open the hearts of all your special guests.

Flowers open hearts, and what a gift to give to the people who have chosen to spend this special day with you. Give the sentiment back. If it’s a destination wedding, place flowers in each of the guest’s rooms as a surprise. If it’s a one-night affair, pick a pretty but inexpensive flower and place it on every woman’s place setting.

Don’t think that just because he’s a guy he doesn't care about the flowers. Pick a flower that fits him.

Don’t make the decision on what flower he is going to wear. While he may not be super knowledgeable in the flower arena, don’t assume he doesn't care (biggest mistake brides make, is to take control of everything.) Even if the says he doesn't care about the flower he wears, he does, it’s on his body! Give him a few options and let him choose… even if he chooses the one you like the least.

Don’t assume your guy is a mind reader. If you want to receive flowers, even after your big day, tell him so (and explain why.)

A great marriage takes care, not hard work. And it never involves mind reading. If you are a woman who really enjoys receiving flowers, tell your man! Tell him what kind, and why they mean so much to you. Mind reading is a dangerous sport. Don’t do it! Ask for what you need, and usually you will get it.

Don’t wait for someone to give you flowers to feel the love.

Do make flowers a daily part of your self-love practice, even after you are married.

It’s a fact that the amount of love you have in your life starts with the amount of love you have for yourself. Self-love isn’t something you have, it’s a practice you either keep in your life or don’t… and flowers are a fabulous, inexpensive and super effective way to keep the self-love going. You don’t have to wait for your husband or finance’ to give flowers to you, you can buy them yourself.

As a designer (and a bride-to-be this July), I believe your living space should reflect both of your senses of style and personalities. Flowers are an easy and versatile way to decorate your home together, plus a Harvard study showed that having flowers in the home decreases anxiety and provides bursts of energy that last well into the day. Since you’re surely having flowers at your wedding, keep the floral décor going as you set up your home together.

Have a special, personal touch at your wedding table. Ask your florist to fill a favorite or sentimental vase with flowers for your big day.

Remember your wedding every day by keeping an arrangement or bud vase of your bouquet flowers in your foyer or on your kitchen table in your new home.

As you set up home together, experiment with flowers. Create a “wow factor” with flowers that are bold to add drama to a room, or add flowers that match a color to add depth to a room.

Pick one “go-to” room in your house as a place to relax and unwind together. Choose fragrant flowers for this room to immediately “take you away from it all” and focus on each other.

Care and Feeding: Just like a relationship, flowers need care and feeding. Start by getting the freshest flowers from your florist. Keep the container filled with water and the flower food that was provided, and follow the instructions on the packet. Replace the water when it gets cloudy, and if possible, re-cut the stems one or two inches with a sharp knife. Immediately put the flowers back into the water. Keep your flowers in a cool spot away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

I was so happy when Deborah Summers.ower of A Bride's Choice Florist asked me to help her with the tabletop portion for her booth at Orchard in Bloom 2010. This nationally recognized garden show is now in its 21st year! The Orchard School and Indy Parks partner for a wonderfully delicious show featured at Holliday Park in Indianapolis, Indiana. This year, they have decided to also showcase a wedding tent - Weddings in Bloom. Deborah did a beautiful job (as always) on the florals!

Green weddings are definitely growing in popularity these days. If the bride and groom care deeply for the environment, then this is a perfect way to share your care with your wedding guests. Ways to go green? Keep the guest list small. Use recycled products for your invitations,etc. Have your ceremony in a park and use the natural surroundings as your decor. Give seedlings as favors or donate to a Green cause. Even if you don't go entirely green on your wedding day, find some way to save the environment!

My new friend, Leslie Henkel, publicist at Stewart, Tabori & Chang / Abrams Image was kind enough to send me two copies of the book Green Wedding: Planning Your Eco-Friendly Celebration byMireya Navarro. The book is full of great ideas on having a green wedding. I've been perusing on line and can not wait to get my copy which my brides can view in the e-vents library.

My philosophy...

As a wedding photographer, I am privileged to capture the images that will serve as my clients' memories for the rest of their lives. I strive to create classic, timeless imagery that captures the atmosphere and presence of your wedding day. My goal is to put my clients at ease so they forget a camera is even in their presence. This allows me to capture candid, photojournalistic style images that will dramatically tell your story.

What inspired you to become a photographer?

I have always loved art and drawing, but when I discovered wedding photojournalism a few years ago, I was captivated by the raw storytelling aspect of it. I used to enjoy taking pictures of objects and landscapes, but once I started photographing people, I never looked back!

What services do you offer a bridal couple?

My standard package includes unlimited wedding day coverage, digital negatives, and an online proof store. I also offer Coffee Table Albums & Parent Albums, Proof Prints, and Engagement & Bridal Photo Sessions.

How do you prepare the day of a wedding? Any special things you do?

In the days leading up to the wedding, I make sure all of my batteries have a fresh charge, touch base with my clients, pack up my camera gear, and organize my paperwork (itineraries, shot lists, contact information, etc.). Many times I’ll even look through portfolios of other photographers to inspire and motivate me to take my craft to the next level.

Who influences your work? Which photographers do you follow?

Zack Arias has been a huge inspiration and teacher for my lighting technique. He always has good practical advice for both photographic technique and business.

Paul Van Hoy II is my biggest photojournalistic inspiration. He has an incredible eye for composition and capturing a moment.

What is the best part of your job?

I love that no two weddings are the same. I’m always working in different environments and different people. This makes the creative possibilities infinite!

What is your photography style?

Most of the day, I shoot photojournalistic images. When it comes to taking dramatic portraits, I use an editorial approach.

What is the most unusual wedding photo request you have had?

During a wedding reception earlier this year, the DJ tricked everyone on the dance floor into having me take a series of shots that spelled Y.M.C.A. with their arms. Of course, he played the song immediately following the pictures!

What are your favorite shots to take?

I enjoy taking editorial style portraits of the bride and groom alone immediately following the ceremony. It gives me a chance to be creative with lighting and different environments. More importantly, it’s the happiest point of the day for the couple, so they are always beaming in the pictures.

Advice for a bridal couple?

On your wedding day, just have fun! You’ve prepared months for this and when it comes, just let go and enjoy the ride.

You win a dream vacation……which do you prefer? Vegas or the Bahamas?

Definitely Vegas! I’ve been several times to see Elton John’s the Red Piano show and always have had a blast. The restaurants and hotels are out of this world, and there is always something exciting happening.

Favorite wedding cake flavor?

I may be a little boring, but you can’t go wrong with vanilla and buttercream icing!

Hobbies?

I love to play the piano and keyboards! In fact, I play in a band and also at my local church. I also enjoy hiking, biking, and just being outdoors!

A piece of jewelry from a special family member or friend.
A piece of the wedding gowns of your mother and/or grandmother sewn into the inside of your gown. This can even be used as a hanky.
A button from your father and/or grandmother sewn into the hem of your gown.
An old love letter from your father to your mother tucked in your bridal purse.
A vintage ribbon tied to your bouquet. Even better - add a tiny photo charm with a loved one who has passed on.
An antique car for the bridal transportation.

Let's talk linens. Visit any rental company website and you will find tons of variaties of linens. From Bengaline to Crush to Imperial to Moire, you will find it all. It can be a little unsettling not knowing what each type is and why you may want to choose one over the other. You'll find a multitude of colors on each website.

The best advice I can give to you is to visit your local rental company or order a swatch if you are ordering on line. Your idea of gold may not be the same as the linen company ships to you. Better to be safe than sorry. I offer several swatch books for my bridal couples to touch and feel. I still suggest visiting your linen rental company.

What can I say? I LOVE Valentine's Day. It is probably my favorite non-religious holiday. My deep affection for the holiday dates way back to my childhood. I remember making Valentine's Day boxes. These cute little boxes held our Valentine's Day cards from classmates. With white wrapping paper and decorated with red and pink construction hearts, these boxes held the most wonderful cards in the world. I also remember receiving Valentine's Day cards and Chocolate Turtles in a heart shaped box from my father every year. I still miss this - after almost 15 years. You may think my husband and I go all out for Valentine's Day. We don't. Our day is simple, we usually enjoy a wonderful dinner at home just enjoying the day and each other and our pups. I do believe that you should show the ones you love how you feel every day, but isn't it fun just to have this one extra special day of love? How will you enjoy your day?

Pearls appear to be showing up all over the place now - AGAIN. Traditional pearls are classic for weddings. Often, these are ones passed down from your mother or grandmother. What a beautiful way to include a bit of your family jewelry into your wedding day accessories. Now, we are seeing more trendy pearls making they way into wedding wear. The big chunky ones add a bit of hip, cool, chicness to your attire.

Here is a bit about different types of pearls from essortment.com:

There are a lot of different styles of pearls. Just because it's not the standard round white pearl, doesn't mean it's not a pearl. You have the round pearls, which range in different colors; baroque pearls, which are round-shaped or pear shaped. You never know what shape it's going to be. You have sea salt pearls and fresh water pearls and those are the one's that look like pearls. They are real funny yellow tint. They are natural pearls, they are just fresh water pearls, so they don't grow as round and they don't look as perfect as sea cultured pearls. Then you have the Tahitian pearls, which are grown only in Tahiti and they are black or silver. Some have a purple hue to them, but those are natural too. There are so many different colors and a variety of pearls out there and just because it's not a standard one, doesn't mean it is not a real one.

The Color Of Love: Red is the symbolic color of Valentine’s Day. But, whether you choose to marry on the holiday or not, incorporate this look into your day!

Valentine’s Day might be the most “commercially” romantic day of the year, but my guess is if you plan to wed in 2010 then your date takes the cake. So while you might not say “I Do” on this banner date, what if you want to incorporate hints of the holiday into your big day?

Red is not only the symbolic color of Valentine’s Day but certainly the most romantic color in the bridal palette, representing love in many languages. But the color can be overused and oversaturated at an event, so use it accordingly (and sparingly in some places) and your wedding day look will be engrained in guests’ minds for decades to come.

Before you accent your bouquet with Black Magic roses, consider all the options - you’d be surprised at just how many are out there.

Black Baccara
This rose is as close to black as you can get and as the bloom opens, the color extends from black to a deep blueberry and burgundy. Velvety in texture, this rose stands out – but beware, not for the faint of heart.

Black Beauty
There is really something alluring about near black buds. This hybrid rose is slightly smaller than the ‘Black Baccara’. An all around dark burgundy, sought after for its unique beauty.

Black Magic
Black Magic roses are a deep, deep red (think Ashlee Simpson’s wedding). Place these beauties next to Baccara and Beauty roses, and you can see that they are the lightest of the three, but a valid member of the dark rose family. If you love the idea of a mysterious ambiance but aren’t quite head over heels for something too dark, this is your flower.

Ruby Red
A cluster-like bloom of cheerful cherry red. This rose takes the cake if you want to celebrate with color, but still want that romantic rouge.

Cherry Parfait
Swirls of white petals with a broad cherry-red edge are sweet and delicate. Spring has sprung with these little ones!

Chrysler Imperial
This stunning beauty captivates people with a powerful rich rose fragrance matched with velvety red petals. Large headed full flowers are supported by straight stems and paired with dark matte-green leaves.

Hot Chocolate
These warm chocolate burnt-red and orange blooms grow in clusters and look fabulous in low and lush arrangements. Large and loose, they repeatedly flower throughout the year to compliment a romantic summer night gathering or a winter wedding. Almost good enough to eat – ahh, but most rose varieties are edible!

Lavaglut
Large overflowing clusters of deep velvety red seem to continually 'erupt' from a background of smooth green leaves, creating a look that is sure to wow!

Lover’s Lane
Even though the color is deeply saturated, this bloom is surprisingly bright thanks to its lightly colored reverse side. A striking example of the classic garden rose. Pluck in the earlier stage of blossoming to enjoy as it opens and settles into a stunning end result.

Scentimental
Uncommonly lovely, this is an absolutely unique rose. Its checkered red and white petals are one of a kind. Some are burgundy with white splashes and others cream and red combinations. Very little excess foliage allows for a rightful central focus.

Altissimo
A darling little bud of a flower, long lasting and single-petaled, consists of a cherry red hue with a yellow center. A very summery flower, perfect for the mason jar wedding or outdoor summer celebration.

One of the best things about planning your wedding is the cake tasting. The thought of tasting tons of sugary, moist, sweetness is a dream come true for most brides and grooms. Ganache:

A rich creamy chocolate filling made of chocolate and cream, used for confections such as the filling of truffles

Fondant:

An icing made out of gelatin, confectioners sugar and water. A very smooth and maleable icing that dries hard. This icing is also called rolled fondant because it has to be rolled on to cakes.

Buttercream:

I am reposting this because today, I lost a heel cap. Why? because I wasn't wearing my trusty Solemates guards.........

I found these fantastic items while reading An Atlanta Brides blog. I only wish I had known about these when my office was downtown and I had to maneuver around grates and the sidewalks literally CHEWED up my heels. Mind you, I am sure Tony from CENTO Shoes didn't mind. Anyway, getting back to the subject of this post....SOLEMATES High Heelers. These cute little things protect your heels from city grates, cracks and sidewalks. They also are great for outdoor weddings where you may be walking in the grass. They come in clear,white and black. My first event that I planned and made me realize I wanted to start my own company was a tea party. We actually called it a HIGH TEA (and still do) even though what we are enjoying is AFTERNOON TEA.
HIGH TEA defined ..............
This British tradition is a late-afternoon or early evening meal, usually quite substantial. It originated in the 19th century as a simple, early workingman's supper. High tea can be served buffet-style or set on a table. It includes a variety of dishes such as cornish pasties, welsh rabbit, scotch woodcock and various other meat and fish dishes. Also included are plenty of buns, crumpets, biscuits and jams, as well as an elaborate array of cakes and pastries and, of course, steaming pots of hot tea. (from Answers.com)

AFTERNOON TEA defined...........
Afternoon tea (because it was usually taken in the late afternoon) is also called "low tea" because it was usually taken in a sitting room or withdrawing room where low tables (like a coffee table) were placed near sofas or chairs generally in a large withdrawing room. This is the 10th year anniversary for our annual High Tea here in Indianapolis at the historic Canterbury Hotel. Jame Thompson, catering manager for the Canterbury Hotel has assured us this one will be the BEST ever.

My friend and fellow wedding planner, Kelly McWilliams of Weddings by Socialites is hosting a Mothers Tea Party in sunny Florida. I think this is a brilliant idea! How fun to host a vintage tea party for your bridesmaids luncheon? The vintage photo is from another fellow planner, Aletha Vandermaas of Pearls Events, blog. You've been racking your brain, checking out the web and asking everyone what to get your new husband for a wedding day gift. Why not give him some boudoir photos? This hot trend has really taken off lately and as you can see they are sizzlin' HOT..... Think this may be a little too risque for your taste? Don't worry - you have complete control over how much or how little skin you show. It is super important to find a photographer that you feel comfortable with. This may be your wedding photographer or another one you choose. I love the shots done in hotel rooms. Find a hotel that suits your style and see if you can rent the room for a few hours(make sure you explain what you are doing). Most photographers who have done a lot of boudoir photo sessions will have a list of hotels. So, go find something sexy to wear and let the shooting begin. Trust me - you and your new husband WON'T regret it.

At some point during your life you'll have to make a toast. A toast is defined as "something in honor in which persons usually drink." It's also defined as "sliced bread browned on both sides by heat." But let's stick with the first one. (ed. Note: we do not cover 'how to make toast' here)
There are two stages to making a toast.
Making the Toast
First, know the specifics of the event. Is it formal? It is a picnic? Does the toast concern one person or a couple? If you are wearing a bow tie and cumber bun (that big ribbon around your stomach), then you'll want to make the toast more eloquent, as you will no doubt be surrounded by people you may be hitting up for money or interviewing with in the future. If you're outside in casual wear, the toast can be casual. By casual, we don't mean attempting to wing it on the spot. Prepare ahead of time.
Don't sweat creating the toast from scratch. Use part of a famous speech, a poem, a quote or even a portion of a love letter in your toast. Use substantial and meaningful words, and eliminate feeble words like "kinda," "nice" and "awesome." Feel free to use humor in your speech, but if you don't feel particularly funny, don't go for the laugh. It is your job to highlight the honored guest, not to work the room like a lounge act. Stories about the guest of honor make great toast material, but don't tell a tale where you have to be an insider to understand. Remember, entertaining yourself should be your least priority. Another note: embarrassing stories make for great laughs and do make their way into toasts, but there is a thin line between gosh-gollie embarrassment and the story about the stun gun and the pony.
Most importantly, this toast is about the honoree, not about you. Avoid stories where you end up talking about yourself. Keep the "I" rule in mind- keep the amount of I's in your toast to a minimum.
Executing the Toast
Practice giving the toast. Say it a few times until you can give it fluidly. If you are using a notecard, be sure you know if well enough so you can keep going if you lose your place.
Keep it brief. Technically, you are entitled to go on as long as you like, however, the longer you talk, the more chance you have of losing your audience's attention (especially when the open bar is nearby). Some of the most poignant toasts are a single line or two.
Direct your toast toward the guest (or guests) of honor. Speak loudly and slowly so even those in the cheap seats can hear you.

Martha Stewart Weddings 15th Year Anniversary

A big congratulations and an even bigger THANKS to Martha Stewart Weddings on their 15th year anniversary! Thanks because I have learned so many wonderful things and have been able to share them with my brides and grooms. If you haven't already, you MUST go purchase the Anniversary issue of the magazine immediately! It is chock full of wonderful ideas as well as flashbacks of the past 15 years. I think you'll really enjoy the "Our Best Ever GOOD THINGS" feature. Enjoy browsing thru Aww-Inspiring real weddings. MS Weddings always has the best goodies and you can always download the fabulous clip-art from their website for your own wedding. Some of my favorite downloads have been the daily agenda sheets for destination weddings. These fab sheets are delivered to each guests room (think - cruise sheets) each morning which detail what is happening each day as well as fun things guests can do.
Little known fact - my very first experience with Martha Stewarts wedding was when I made my sisters small wedding cake from Martha's wedding cake recipe. Trust me when I say I am NO BAKER - love to cook - but BAKE. This cake was both delicious and beautiful.

Bridal Shows 2010

'Tis the season for bridal shows. The first one of the 2010 in Indianapolis is January 3, at The Ritz Charles - (more details below). The Ritz Charles always has an amazing show and I am sure this one will be no exception. Everyone is full of renewal and grand thoughts for the new year. As a bride (9 years ago), I was able to go to several shows in my area. I liked both the smaller ones and the larger ones. The small one where there may just be a few vendors has a more intimate feel. I would strongly urge you to try to attend one of the smaller ones first. You may just find your vendors there. You will definitely have more 1:1 time with your vendors. The larger ones are a little more tricky. I remember being completely overwhelmed when I attended the first one as a bride. I always prepare my brides for their first bridal show. The trick is to go prepared and to understand that there will be ALOT of people at the larger ones. Lots of vendors AND lots of other brides, MOB, Bridesmaids,etc. Below are some pointers to keep in mind when you go. They are in no particular order:

*Pre-register. Chances are you're going to have to pay a few dollars to go in. Most times, you can pre-register online and save some money, so do this if it's an option. It will also save you some time at the door. That means more time on the floor to research vendors.

*Check with your wedding planner for free tickets. Most times, the bride and groom receive free tickets.
* Grab a bag or two. If you're handed a bag when you enter, take it! You're going to be collecting lots and lots of paper with vendors information on it and it's nice just to be able to slip into the bag. My brides LOVE the bags they receive at the vacation booths. Your second bag can be used to discard some of the items thrust upon you that you don't want and have a hard time telling the vendor "no, thanks". Just remember to recycle.
* Take a pen. This way as you collect those pieces of paper you can make a star on the ones you like, so if there are a lot of vendors you can remember who's who when you get home.
* Ask questions. That's what bridal shows are all about -- getting to talk to the vendors. Find out exactly what they mean by on their handouts. Ask details about the packages they offer or how flexible they are about customization for your wedding. Also, make sure they have your date available. If there is a vendor you are really interested in hiring, make sure you grab a business card, info and make an introduction. It is very likely that they will remember something about you. You'll have more time later to chat if you can schedule something with them a few days after the show.

* Avoid entering your name into every drawing. Most times, you will only receive a lot of solicitation phone calls from vendors you really are not interested in anyway. Only enter if you are really interested and won't screen their calls.

* Limit the people you take with you. You will have a ton of vendors to review and this is truly for you and your groom. I would suggest taking: the groom, planner, mother or anyone who is close to you and you feel will be helpful. Just make sure to keep your number to two extras per show.

*Allot enough time. For a larger show, this means at least 3 - 4 hours. You don't want to feel rushed. Why not make a day of it and have brunch or dinner afterwards?
*Go later in the day. The busiest time is at the very beginning of the show. Rest assured the vendors will still have plenty of items on hand to pass out to you.
*Take your camera or camera phone. For photographing some of the displays.
* Have a plan. Most times, the same vendors will be at each show. If you believe you will be overwhelmed by the size of the show, then just visit a few vendor categories to visit.
*Wear comfortable shoes! Whether comfort to you is sneakers or stilettos, just be sure to wear what is comfortable for you. ( My husband thinks I am crazy because heels are MUCH more comfortable for me) You will be walking A LOT and most times the flooring is NOT carpeted.

Classy Engagement Photoshoot

Many of you know my love of great wedding photographer's websites and blogs. I could spend most of the day viewing the sites. Lucky thing that I get to do this when researching photographers for brides or for info for this blog. I really enjoy the fun and flirty engagement shots most couples do. However, when I came across these photos from Megan W. Photography, I was IN LOVE (again) with the dressed up engagement photos of Matt & Erica. Erica is a girl after my own heart with her Tiffany bracelet, stilettos and pencil skirt.
One of my all - time favorite Indiana photographers is Megan Wynn-Grandi. Her photography seems to really give you the feel of love for each couples she photographs. You can also tell she really connects with her couples. I can not stress to brides how important it is to connect to your photographer. You will be spending A LOT of time with your photographer and you need someone who will make you and your fiance feel comfortable.

Whether you are just beginning or deep into your wedding planning, they are many things you can include in your wedding to make it more eco-friendly. A few of my favorites:

A Wedding Menu Board and/or Place Card Board: Depending on the theme of your wedding, these can be created on foam board, black board and a few other options. I LOVE the foam board options. Incorporate your theme/monogram at the time and create away. Take the file to your nearest printer and the board can be printed quickly (usually within one week). You can also have a calligrapher create a board. I adore the romantic feel of calligraphy and what a wonderful touch for your guests. {Photo credit: Weddingbee.com}
Water Stations: You may have noticed that many restaurants don't automatically offer water to you. It's not that they are being stingy or want you to order their bottled water. In most instances, they are trying to conserve water. You can do the same at your wedding. How many glasses go untouched? Have your caterer or venue offer a water station - complete with beautiful glasses and carafes, lemons, limes, etc. The guests can help themselves or you may opt to have a water station attendant.

Thanksgiving Week

We are a little less than a week away from one of my favorite holidays, Thanksgiving. Sure, most people may think it's because of the wonderful food. That is partially true. I love the holiday because it brindgs family and friends together in the most wonderful way. My husband and I host the Thanksgiving Day dinner every year at our home. That doesn't mean that we I cook everything. Far from it...... I roast the turkey and turkey breast and usually make stuffing and additional side (enough to feed at least 20 including leftovers) and a dessert. Family and a few friends round out the meal with wonderful dishes: ham, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, tossed salad, yams, cranberry sauce, greens, green beans, sweet potato pies, cakes, apple pies and dirty rice. Yes, I said dirty rice. My sister and her family (mainly her family) LOVE dirty rice. Heck, they love ANY kind of rice. So, for the last 17 years, we've had dirty rice and it has become a wonderful tradition. I LOVE having people over for Thanksgiving - must be the planner in me. It's wonderful to catch up with everyone. It's especially fun now that we have a tone of kids in the family. We always invite guests who may not be able to go out of town to be with their own family and adopt them as our own. After we have stuffed ourselves and play a few games, the BLACK FRIDAY crew attends to the planning our stragety for the next day. I know, I know - most of you HATE the BLACK FRIDAY shopping thing. Trust me, I don't get caught up in the madness of the crowd trying to get one of six must have items in the store. I ususally go in the other direction - to the cleaning supplies and other household items. It's become a wonderful family tradition were I get to spend another day with the ladies in teh family! My nephew also comes - I love hanging with him. I think he comes more because I want him to than he really wants to (did that make sense?). Once we hit the major stores, it's off to breakfast were we try to recharge and then off to Keystone at the Crossing for more shopping. I love going to the Crossing because of the classy Christmas decorations.

Here's a litle bit of background info on Austin Warnock:
I grew up in a camera store that was owned by my grandfather and have always loved and been enamored with cameras and photography.
I modeled in New York City for big name photographers landing advertising campaigns for Prada, and worked on spreads for L'uomo Vogue.
I moved back to Indianapolis after traveling the world for four years. I picked up my camera and began shooting bands and started getting published nationally. I started shooting weddings last year and really looked to bring a fine art documentary approach to the wedding day. I absolutely LOVE film and shoot about 90% film which seems to be nearly unheard of here in Indianapolis. I believe in film and love it for it's ability to bring out depth and contrast in the final image.

Reduce your stress

Let's face it - planning a wedding can be stressful. Add the the stress of everyday life and it can be downright overwhelming. What is a bride to be to do? There are actually several things you can do to help relieve stress:

Regular exercise. Not only will exercise relieve stress- you will get in shape as well.

Eat.........healthy foods. Drink LOTS of water.

Get a massage. Spend an hour or so with your favorite masseuse and feel your stress disappear.

BREATH - take a breather. I always advise my brides to take a few days off from the planning process. You may have looked at a MILLION photographers websites and now they all start looking the same. This is a sign it is time fr you to step away.

Plan early. Start your planning process early - then, you'll have the luxury to step away from the planning for a bit.

Stay organized. Start a binder when you first start planning. Use separate tabs for each of your categories.

ASK THE PLANNER SUNDAY - engagement ring shopping

I am shopping for a ring, and I am a little overwhelmed by the 4 C's! Is there a guideline for prioritizing cut, color, clarity & carat to get the best dazzle for my special lady? Also, do you recommend an independent appraiser?

Dear Bull in the Jewelery Store,
Congratulations to you on your upcoming engagement and for being a wise buyer. As you know, the 4C's a major when deciding on the perfect ring for your perfect lady. Let's review the 4C's:

Color: With the exception of "fancy colored diamonds", the more colorless a diamond is, the more valuable it is. Jewelers grade diamonds on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow). Anything more yellow than D is considered fancy and is much more expensive.

Cut: Many people make the mistake of thinking that cut means the shape of the diamond. Rather, it means the way the diamond was faceted to allow light to reflect from it. In a well cut diamond, light enters the diamond and reflects straight back to the viewer's eye. Some cutters will sacrifice cut to create the largest possible diamond, thus making too shallow or too deep of a cut and causing light to "leak" out the sides and bottom of the diamond.

Cut can be something very difficult for a layperson to evaluate, which is why it is important to get an AGS Certificate or a GIA Certificate verifying the quality of your diamond. Cut is graded Ideal, Premium, Very Good, Good, Fair, and Poor. Generally you should seek an Ideal to Very Good Diamond. Budget-conscious shoppers may opt for good.

Clarity: Diamonds frequently have inclusions, or small flaws, air bubbles, scratches, or other minerals inside the diamond. The less inclusions a diamond has, the more valuable it is, and the more beautiful it is.
The scale for grading diamond's clarity is:

•F Flawless - no internal or external inclusions.

•IF Internally Flawless - no internal inclusions, slight external inclusions.

•VVS1-VVS2Very Very Slightly Included - minute inclusions that are very difficult to detect under 10x magnification, even by an experienced grader.

•VS1-VS2 Very Slightly Included - minute inclusions that are invisible to the naked eye and seen only with difficulty under 10x magnification.

•SI1-SI2 Slightly Included - invisible to the naked eye, yet easily seen by an experienced grader under 10x magnification.

•I1-I3 Included - inclusions are visible to the naked eye and affect brilliance.

Stones that are VVS2 to F are very rare and thus very expensive. Most couples will opt for something between SI2 and VS1, and will never know the difference.

Caret:This refers to the size of the stone. While some value caret above all, others prefer a small ring regardless of budget. If you're buying a ring as a surprise for someone, consider how flashy their other jewelry is. If they're not someone who wears a lot of designer labels or big jewelry, perhaps you'll want to opt for a smaller stone. This site has a very useful chart to see how the most common sizes look on a model's hand. Ideally, you'll be able to try on a variety of sizes within your budget to see which size looks best on you or your love.

There really is no guideline for prioritizing the 4C's. What I would suggest is finding out what she may want. More often than not, you'll have an idea of the style of ring she is looking for.

If your special lady is looking for a big diamond, prioritize the carat first, then color, cut, clarity.
If she is looking for the brilliance of a flawless diamond and doesn't mind the size, then go for one with an excellent cut and clarity.

I would definitely recommend using an Independent Appraiser. I think it will give you a peace of mind about your diamond purchase. The seller may be a bit biased about the diamond they are selling you. They may also have overinflated the cost. While I do not believe this to be the case with every jeweler, it may be the case with some. Better safe than sorry - right?

I also heard a horror story of a bridal couple taking a diamond to an Independent Appraiser - who found the diamond to be of high quality, etc. The couple purchased the stone and after it was set took it back to the Independent Appraiser - who quickly saw this was not the same ring. It was in fact, a CZ (cubic zirconia).

The Bride Wore WHAT????????

This is one of those years when Halloween happens to fall on a Saturday - the traditional day for weddings. This had me thinking about what brides may do differently when exchanging her vows on Halloween. So, I did a little research and found some rather lovely gowns done in black. If you choose to wear a black or dark wedding gown, please keep a few tips/ideas in mind:

Have your groom wear an all-white tuxedo
Have your wedding veil dyed black to match your dress
Have your bridesmaids wear white and add black sashes or black wraps

Getting Gifts 101

You'll be receiving shower gifts and wedding gifts for days. Here's how to respond with grace and style.

Gifts brought to an engagement party

Whenever you’re the guest of honor at a party where gifts are not expected and a few guests bring gifts in any case, accept them graciously. Then set them aside to open later. This avoids making empty-handed guests feel uncomfortable. Follow up afterward with a written thank-you note to each giver.

Shower gifts

When everyone will be bringing a gift, you’ve got the opportunity to thank each guest in person. Traditional etiquette states that you don’t have to send a thank-you note to a person you’ve already thanked in person but a note sent nonetheless is always appreciated. If a gift arrives at the shower from someone who couldn’t attend, then you should send a note.

When a large gift is given from a group—such as office colleagues—thank all the givers in a speech. Later send a note to the one person who organized the gift, thanking all the givers, or send individual notes to each giver.

Wedding gifts

If gifts are delivered to your home before the wedding, it’s OK to open them as soon as you’ve received them. Some couples like to wait and open them all at once after the honeymoon. If you wait, consider making it an occasion, inviting close family and friends over. Whatever your timing, each gift must be acknowledged with a thank you note.

Exchanging gifts

Even when you carefully register your wedding gift choices and let everyone know where you’re registered, couples can still receive a gift that’s just not their style. If you’re close to the giver, be upfront about it and let them know that you’d like to exchange it. If you exchange it without them knowing about it, they may wonder whatever happened to it each time they come over for a visit.

The exception to this rule comes when the gift comes from someone you’re not close to such as a business colleague of your father’s. Send a thank-you note but don’t mention that you’re planning to exchange it.

Gifts that arrive damaged

Be sure to return the gift to the store bringing all the wrapping. Any reputable retailer will replace the goods. If the store is out of town or an online service, call to find out what their procedure entails. Again, if the store or service is good, there shouldn’t be any problem. In both cases, there’s no need to bother the giver with these details; just thank them.

If a damaged gift arrives from a guest by mail, check to see whether the package was insured. If it was, notify the sender immediately so that she can collect the insurance.

If an uninsured gift arrives damaged from a close friend or relative, tell them. They’ll want to know. If the giver is not close to you, letting him know only obliges him to buy you another present.

This is a completely personal post, but I have to share. I am going to be in the Oprah Winfrey audience in October! I am beyond thrilled. Some of you may remember that I was also in the audience many, many years ago. It was an awesome experience and I have always wanted to go back. This time I am along with three of my friends. I absolutely LOVE the new way they allow guests to register. Instead of the old way of phoning in and getting a busy signal or worst yet the dreaded " All circuits are busy" message, audience hopefuls have a much better way to get tickets. it is actually rather easy. Go to the website - register - go to the audience reservation section. You will then see a message telling you the status of audience reservations ( we are taking reservations or check back later). If they are indeed taking reservations, you will have a limited period in which to sign up. You are able to sign up for any show during that month which is on the list. 24 hours after the registration period closes, you will receive notification of your status. You will either receive a "Sorry, next time." email or a "You have been accepted" email. I have had both. Thankfully, this time I received the latter. You can get more detailed information here.

My three girlfriends and I will be attending the later taping of the day. We don't know what the show will be about. We did receive a detailed list of instructions.

Oprah's studio audiences are known to be THE best dressed studio audiences. Now, we need to decide what to wear!

Volunteers at your wedding....

You have announced your engagement to everyone and now the offers for assistance are pouring in. Uncle Joe loves taking pictures and does a great job capturing the family reunion, but he's not a professional. Cousin Mary has a friend from work who is a wonderful cook, but she's not a professional. Donnie DJ knows how to pick a great dance song, but he is not a professional. Everyone means well. Really, they do. Usually, their intent is to save you money. You think it's a great idea UNTIL......... someone can't make the wedding (you name the reason), you find out your "DJ" is afraid to make announcements, your "caterer" only has crock pots to keep the food warm and no assistants and your "photographer's" finger is in just about every picture he has taken of your wedding day. Believe me, I have heard horror stories like these and many more.

It is so important to hire professional wedding vendors - with references - for your big day. Be sure to do your research and interview, interview, interview!

Ask questions - who will do my wedding in the event something happens to you?, do you have a contract, may I see pictures of your most recent work?, references from recent brides?

Gorgeous Gown Trends This Season

We love speaking with Kleinfeld’s fabulous Fashion Director, Randy Fenoli. He meets with almost 15,000 brides a year in Kleinfeld’s 35,000 square foot luxurious flagship store in Manhattan. He is dedicated to helping brides find their perfect dress. Randy fills us in on all the hot gown styles this season!

Q: Tell us about the 50's inspired trend in gowns.
R: A lot of designers this season have definitely been influenced by fashion from the 1950’s which started with the “New Look” introduced by Christian Dior. Strapless boned bodices, natural waists, and full ballgown skirts are back in bridal fashion! Designers are using lighter fabrics like silk taffeta, organza, and even tulle. They really look like something Grace Kelly would have worn. And what bride doesn’t want to look like Grace Kelly on her wedding day!

Q: Three-dimensional texture is big this season. What do we need to know about this trend?
R: Whether it’s three-dimensional embroidery, shredded fabrics, or layers upon layers of ruffles, brides today love this light and airy textural look that gives interest and movement to their gown.

Q: The destination wedding gown is also popular. What kind of gowns can we expect to see in this category?
R: With airfares so cheap, couples are choosing exotic locations to say I do! A destination wedding can be held anywhere… from a beach in the Caribbean to an intimate gathering in a vineyard or a formal setting overlooking the Grand Canyon. Today, destination gowns are not just your simple chiffon sheath. One of my brides was proposed to in Arizona so she decided to have her ceremony on the cliffs overlooking the majestic Grand Canyon. Even though it’s an outdoor setting and the bride is 41 years old, it’s still her first wedding and she’s wearing that big beaded ball gown she’s always dreamed of!

Q: Tell us more about the one-shoulder looks.
R: First spotted on supermodels like Kate Moss, the one-shoulder dress quickly spread to the red carpet at the Academy Awards, and then to the runways of the bridal fashion shows. Who can forget the First Lady Michelle O’Bama dancing with the President in her one-shouldered gown at the inauguration ball?! It is a very hot trend now.

Q: And last – the BLING trend!
R: Every bride wants to shine on her wedding day, and designers are answering the call with gowns encrusted with jewels, rhinestones, and tons of sparkling Swarovski crystals! Some brides are wearing headpieces with bling as well.

We've all at one time or another wondered "What should I wear?" When attending a wedding, it is even more important to know what the dress code is. No one ever likes feeling too over or under dressed. It is especially important to know what the dress code is for a wedding.

What exactly do all of the dress codes mean? The wonderful people at InStyle Weddings have helped to decode the dress code.

White Tie: Guys - black tail coat, matching black pants, white bow tie, white pique shirt and white vest. Ladies - floor length or ball gown.

Black Tie: Guys - Tuxedos. Ladies - floor length gowns or cocktail dresses - fancier than a typical little black dress.

Black Tie optional: Guys - Tuxedo or black suit. Ladies - cocktail dress or straight floor length gown (NOT a ball gown).

Cocktail attire: Guys - Suits. Ladies - knee- length dresses or dressy pants worn with a silk, chiffon or otherwise evening appropriate blouse.

Festive attire: Very vague - allows guests to have fun. Most fashion forward guests will take it as a license to wear what they please. Most others will stick to cocktail attire.

No dress code: Guys and ladies - Take cue from the time of day, season and location of the wedding.

BRIDAL SHOWERS

Ever wonder how the tradition of the bridal shower was started? Some say it stemmed from early dowry practices. Many times the bride and her family did not have enough money for the necessary dowry or the Father of the Bride did not approve of the marriage. The family and friends of the bride would "shower" her with gifts. This allowed her to have items to set up her new home with her husband. It was considered at one time bad etiquette for family members to throw the BRIDAL SHOWER. However, now the BRIDAL SHOWER may be thrown by anyone - with the exception of the BRIDAL couple. Most brides to be will have a work shower consisting of her work family.

"Who gets invited to the BRIDAL SHOWER?"

Bridal showers are considered pretty intimate affairs. The guest list should include family, friends and the bridal attendants. Proper etiquette dictates that anyone invited to the BRIDAL SHOWER should also be invited to the wedding. Otherwise.....well, you know what they will think.

Let's talk veils.......

Basically, the definition of a veil is to obscure, mask, shroud or cover. Some say the veil was due to the circumstances of an arranged marriage. The veil was used to cover the brides facial futures from her groom. It was lifted just after they were married - just in case he didn't like her features and wanted to back out of the deal. Others say the veil was used as a sign of the brides submissiveness and obedience to her husband.

Whatever the case may be, it seems that veils are here to stay. There are different types of bridal veils and we'll discuss them here.....

Blusher veil

First time brides tend to favor the blusher veil as it signifies the brides innocence and modesty. The veil usually falls just above the bust and just below the collarbone. Traditionally, the groom lifted the veil the first time when he kissed his bride. However, currently many fathers of the bride opt to lift the blusher veil just before he gives his daughter away in marriage.

Birdcage veil

Older brides or encore brides tend to opt for the birdcage veil. This veil works wonderfully with cocktail dresses or suits and is great for a civil ceremony. Usually it is made of Russian netting - an wide open weave netting.

Back in the day - it was said that only brides being married in a cathedral could wear a cathedral veil. This veil should extend 6 to 12 inches past the length of the train. The cathedral veil should be removed prior to the reception.

Fingertip veil

Probably one of the most popular choices for brides because it is flattering to most brides and bridal gowns. The fingertip veil is so named because it extends to the brides fingertips. The fingertip veil can be worn throughout the ceremony and reception.

......a week day or Sunday wedding. Believe it or not, these weekday weddings are extremely popular these days. I can not tell you the amount of photographers who are blogging about the weddings they are photographing on these formally unconventional wedding days.

What is so great about these weddings? Where do I even begin...........?

You may think your guest won't attend a week day or Sunday wedding? Think again....they are after all excited and happy for you. Most brides and grooms plan at least a year before the wedding - giving guests plenty of time to make arrangements. Travel costs are usually less during the week - as well as hotels.

Another advantage is that you may be able to get that perfect venue, photographer during the week who was already booked for the weekend - at a better deal.

Should you or shouldn't you wear your glasses on your wedding day? As a closet eyeglass wearer, I didn't wear my eyeglasses on my wedding day. The fact is, I only wear them to watch tv. I think a bride who wears glasses everyday SHOULD wear you glasses on her wedding day. They are after all a part of YOU. Most of your guests know you and your glasses. There are so many ways to still have beautiful makeup done so it shows up behind the lenses. Your photographer will be able to cut the glare from the lenses - if there is any. Check out these lovely brides in eyeglasses found on Wedding Bee.

Here are some wonderful tips I found at TorontoBride.com:

If you are using a makeup artist, keep the lines of communication open and let him/her know you'll be wearing your glasses that day (in case he/she assumes you'll be taking them off).

Opt for colours that flatter your eyes and skin.

It is not mandatory to match your makeup to your glasses.

If you're nearsighted, your lenses may make your eyes appear to recede behind those frames.

Opt for a light neutral shadow on your eyelids and brow bones.

Add contour and definition with a slightly darker shade, in the same tone, in the crease area. Then, line only your upper eyelid with eyeliner (or use a dark eye shadow and brush), and apply some great mascara.

If you're farsighted, your eyes will be magnified by the lenses. In this case, you may want to opt for a medium neutral shadow on your eyelids. Go for a slightly darker shade in the crease area but do avoid bright or shiny colours as they will only serve to amplify your eyes further.

Along those same lines, depending on the lenses you have, they can magnify and overemphasize the appearance of under-eye circles (especially if you had trouble sleeping the night before). Use a creamy concealer in a shade similar to your skin colour, then set with loose or pressed powder. You know your eyes and face best.

If you want your eyes to stand out more behind your glasses, you can opt for a more dramatic look. To keep the focus on your eyes and not the glasses, try this technique. Apply a small touch of shimmer eye shadow, in white or champagne, at the inner corner of your eyelids. Blend it in by brushing towards the outer corners of your eyes.

All women benefit from curled lashes and the same goes for you! It creates an instant refreshing look and will, in your case, prevent them from brushing against your lenses. Opt for a mascara that lengthens and volumizes without clumping. Clumps are unattractive across the board.

Eyebrows are key for all women. Keep your eyebrows well groomed and defined to complete your refined wedding day look.

I was in Nordstrom this past week doing some makeup shopping from one of my faves - Bobbi Brown Cosmetics. As I was going thru my goodies when I arrived home, I found a wonderful laminated card from Bobbi in my bag. A list of 10 items taht we all know we should do, but I think we forget about as we live our daily lives. I am definitely keeping this in my home office, work office and in my wallet. I think these are PERFECT for brides. Many times brides tend to get caught up in the planning and forget the few simple items. Take the time to smell the roses and......

Spread beauty.
